Is Tallow Bad for Your Skin? An Honest Answer to the Critics
By Glow Ritual

Tallow is everywhere right now, and so are the warnings. Search “tallow for skin” and you'll find glowing reviews sitting right next to videos saying it's greasy, it clogs pores, it smells, and dermatologists aren't convinced.
We think the critics deserve a straight answer. So here it is: most tallow criticism is fair, about raw or homemade tallow. It just isn't the whole story.
The short answer
Tallow isn't “bad” for skin, and it isn't a miracle either. It's a rich source of fatty acids similar to the ones your skin makes itself. Whether it works for you depends almost entirely on how it's made, what it's combined with and how much you use. A spoon of rendered beef fat and a finished, professionally made face cream are not the same product, even if both say “tallow” on the label.
Criticism 1: “Tallow is greasy and heavy”
Fair, for traditional balms. Straight tallow is dense and occlusive. Rubbed on the face it can sit on top of the skin, look shiny and feel heavy under makeup.
How we're different: Glow Ritual is whipped, not just melted and poured. Grass-fed tallow is combined with squalane, a silky emollient that gives the cream slip, and whipped below 46°C into a silky, airy texture. It's rich, deeply hydrating and never greasy, fast-absorbing and makeup-friendly. A small amount (about a pea-sized amount for the whole face) is all you need. More on that in can tallow be non-greasy on the face?
Criticism 2: “Tallow clogs pores”
It can, for some people. Any rich moisturiser can contribute to congestion on oily or breakout-prone skin, especially if you use too much. Comedogenic ratings you see online are also based on old tests of raw ingredients, not finished formulas.
How we're different: our formula pairs tallow with 4% niacinamide, an ingredient widely used to help improve the look of uneven tone and texture, and lighter emollients so it isn't pure fat sitting on skin. If you're prone to breakouts, start with a small amount at night and see how your skin responds. Read the full answer in does tallow balm clog pores?
Criticism 3: “Tallow smells like beef”
Homemade tallow often does. Rendering fat at home, without careful temperature control, can leave a strong animal smell, and fats that oxidise over time can smell stale.
How we're different: our cream is made by a professional cosmetic manufacturer with controlled temperatures, and it includes vitamin E to help protect the oils from oxidation plus a touch of vanilla extract for a warm, comforting character. No synthetic fragrance.
Criticism 4: “There's no science behind it”
Partly true. There's limited clinical research on tallow itself as a skincare ingredient, and we won't pretend otherwise. What is well understood is that the skin barrier relies on lipids (fats) to hold moisture in, and that skin produces fewer of them as we age.
How we're different: we didn't build Glow Ritual on tallow alone. We paired it with ingredients that have a long track record in modern skincare: niacinamide, squalane, shea butter and vitamin E. Tallow brings the rich, skin-familiar lipids. The actives bring the modern skincare. Read more in why skin loses lipids with age.
Criticism 5: “Homemade tallow isn't hygienic or consistent”
Agreed. Kitchen-made balms vary batch to batch, and without proper processes it's hard to know what you're putting on your face.
How we're different: Glow Ritual is created and owned on the Sunshine Coast, Australia. We source tallow from pasture-raised, grass-fed New Zealand cattle, and it's whipped together with our actives at a specialist cosmetic biotech manufacturer in China, made the same way every batch. See why we're not your kitchen-made tallow cream.
So, is tallow right for you?
Tallow skincare tends to suit people whose skin feels dry, tight or depleted, especially as skin changes with age. If your skin is very oily or you're breaking out, a lighter routine may suit you better. If you have a known beef allergy or a skin condition, check with your GP or dermatologist first. Whatever you choose, patch test anything new.
Our goal is nourishing simplicity: one jar that does the job of several, without the heavy, greasy feel people expect from tallow.

FAQ
Is tallow good or bad for your face?
Neither by default. A well-made tallow face cream can be a nourishing, lipid-rich moisturiser for dry skin. Raw, homemade tallow is more likely to feel greasy and inconsistent.
Why do some dermatologists criticise tallow?
Mostly because research on tallow itself is limited and raw tallow can be heavy and congesting for some skin types. Those are fair points, which is why we built a finished formula with well-known actives rather than selling plain tallow.
Is Glow Ritual greasy?
It's designed not to be. It's whipped with squalane into a velvety texture that absorbs quickly and sits well under makeup. Use a small amount.
Where is Glow Ritual made?
Glow Ritual is created and owned on the Sunshine Coast, Australia. The tallow comes from pasture-raised, grass-fed New Zealand cattle, and the cream is whipped at a specialist cosmetic biotech manufacturer in China.
